“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.”

Effective April 1, 2023, I am no longer accepting new clients and will be taking a leave from the practice of law later this year. Thank you for your understanding.

I love learning, and your child should love learning too! I focused on Educational Technologies while pursuing my degree in Computer Science at Georgia Tech. While at Harvard Law School, I focused on Child Advocacy law. During my studies and ten years of practice, I have seen too many children fall through the cracks in the system. Whether your child is suffering from a learning disability, is autistic, has physical challenges, or is gifted, I can help you work with the school system to create an individual education plan, or an IEP, to meet your child’s needs.

A Fresh Start

As the beginning of the school year approaches, parents start thinking about the issues that might arise with new teachers, new classmates, and even a new school. Will my child fit in? Does the new teacher know how to help my child thrive? Will my child get lost in a new environment? Does the new school have my child’s IEP? What if things don’t go well?

If you have asked one of these questions, you are not alone. The start of a new school year is full of excitement…and anxiety. Uncertainty about your child’s educators and ability to succeed in a new school year or new school typically causes the anxiety and can lead you down the treacherous “what if” rabbit hole.

The best way to address this uncertainty is to start communication with the school early. Most teachers and administrators return to school a week or two before the students. Depending on your child’s needs, it may be appropriate to schedule an IEP team meeting or 504 team meeting before school or during the first few weeks.

As children grow, their needs change. A doctor may prescribe new medication or a different therapy plan. New testing may result in a different diagnosis. Behavioral issues may improve, worsen, or change. Early communication with the school about your child’s current needs will help custom-tailor your child’s plan for success throughout the year.
